Mopping Wood Floors at Home

Having wooden floors can be a beautiful addition to your home. I loved my wooden floors and found taking care of them to be extremely easy. You might agree that hardwood floors are the nicest floors to have in a home.

What You’ll Need:

So, what will you need to keep your floors clean and looking great?

According to Home Floor Experts, you essentially only need 3 things when it comes to properly cleaning wood floors:

  1. The first thing you will need is a hardwood floor mop.
  2. The second thing you will need is cleaner. Here’s the secret. Chemicals you can use will create build-up on your floors, and create more dirt for you to clean. Mix 1/2 C of white vinegar with 1 gallon of warm to hot water.
  3. Finally, you need a spray bottle. If you are very good at math, and know how much liquid the spray bottle can hold, you won’t even need to fill the bucket.

Getting Started:

Here’s how you can clean your hardwood, keep them clean and looking terrific:

  1. Decide if you will buy the mop recommended above, or get down on your hands and knees as our grandmothers did to clean the wooden floor. You can find a mop at most major stores or Research “Hardwood Floor Mop” to see your options.
  2. Depending on the square footage of the area to be cleaned, and the current level of dirt, will determine how easy this will be, and how long it will take. The first time will always take the longest.
  3. To begin, dust mop your floor. There is no point in mopping any floor that has not been swept first.
  4. With your spray bottle, spray some of the water/vinegar mixture on the floor, and mop it up. Continue through your room in this manner. When the mop head gets filthy, take a break and run it through your washing machine. Or, you can buy several mop heads and replace as needed.
  5. Continue until all of your wooden floors have been cleaned. Smile, and feel good that you have taken care of your floors, and created a good care regime for your floors.

If you prefer to clean like your grandmother, have a bucket and microfiber cloth available:

  1. Bucket of Water and VinegarStart with a bucket of the vinegar/water mixture, and a microfiber cloth.
  2. Wash one area, being sure not to saturate any area with too much of your solution.
  3. When the water in the bucket looks dirty, rinse out the bucket and mix another 1/2 Cup of Vinegar with another gallon of warm/hot water.

If you are worried that your house will smell like Cole Slaw or pickles, have no concerns. The odor from vinegar will dissipate quickly, and if it’s nice out, having a window open will help the odor dissipate sooner. Do not be concerned about using something on your floor that is safe to consume.

Having wooden floors kept clean, chemical free and looking good can take you a few minutes to a half hour a week. You might wonder why you didn’t try this sooner.

A mop, some vinegar, water and a spray bottle are all it will take.

Are you ready for great looking, clean floors that might just be the envy of the neighborhood?
